Zeltiq’s breakthrough fat reduction technology, known as CoolSculpting, is the first and only non-invasive, clinically proven procedure to selectively reduce fat layers in problem areas. CoolSculpting is safer than other fat reduction methods because it affects only targeted fat cells, leaving adjacent tissue unharmed and intact.
The CoolSculpting procedure was developed at the Wellman Center for Photomedicine at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston by Massachusetts General Hospital investigators and Harvard Medical School faculty Dr. Dieter Manstein and Dr. R. Rox Anderson.
Their work proved that fat cells are naturally more sensitive to the effects of cold than other cells, including surrounding skin cells. They were able to safely target and kill only the underlying fat, leaving surface skin tissue unaffected.
Zeltiq was founded on the strength of its exclusive worldwide license to the Manstein and Anderson patents. “When we deliver precise cooling to discrete fat bulges on the body, the fatty lipids are slowly released and transported by the lymphatic system to be processed, much like fat from food,” said Dr. Brian Zelickson, Adjunct Associate Professor, Dermatology, University of Minnesota Medical School.
“CoolSculpting is an ideal choice for a wide range of patients who are reasonably fit and want spot reduction and shaping of fat bulges but are not considering a surgical or more invasive procedure.”
Extensive clinical trials were conducted starting in 2007 at 12 “centers of excellence” around the country, and patients participated in a non-randomized study with a prototype ZELTIQ cooling device.
Based on ultrasound assessment, an average fat layer reduction of 20% was demonstrated at four months after only one procedure. No significant adverse events or patient discomfort were reported.
About the procedure
The Zeltiq procedure is comfortable for most patients, and no pain medication is required. It lasts only 1 hour, and can be performed to reduce love handles, belly bulges, back fat and other localised pockets of fat.
When the procedure begins, patients feel a cooling sensation that goes away after a few minutes. The exposure to cooling causes the fat cells to begin a process of natural removal, which gradually reduces the thickness of the fat layer. Most patients keep themselves occupied by reading, working on a laptop, listening to music, or just relaxing.
After the Zeltiq Procedure there is no recovery time and patients usually resume their normal activities the same day, including work and exercise. Within several days after receiving the procedure, cooled fat cells begin a process called apoptosis, which is a natural cell death, and begin to shrink and disappear.
Patients can start to see results as soon as three weeks following the treatment, with most dramatic results occurring over a period of two to four months. After a single procedure patients consistently experiment a fat layer reduction of 22%.
